Now in the hands of the security forces of the countries of the region, the tens of millions of messages that have been exchanged there have made it possible to trigger, in recent months, unprecedented crackdowns against the mafias which have been thriving for thirty years on the ashes of the former Yugoslavia. Above all, these investigations have revealed the extent of the mafia penetration of these States which aspire to join, one day, the European Union.
Rarely has an online messaging app stirred so many feathers among politicians, criminals, law enforcement officials and many others as the Sky ECC app. Yet a global crackdown on the encrypted messaging app seems to have shed what is, for many, an uncomfortable amount of light on links between criminal gangs and public officials.
In a key decision, prosecutors in Bosnia have confirmed that evidence gained through the crackdown on the Sky EEC app will indeed be valid in court cases. Our analysis looks at what has been revealed by the crackdown on the app so far and what can be expected from potential prosecutions.
