The police have arrested three people who are alleged to have been involved with the company EncroChat, which supplied telephones for encrypted communication.
Criminals made massive use of this, until in 2020 it turned out that the Dutch and French police had hacked the European-based message service and read it live for months.
The Public Prosecution Service confirms the arrests that were made in the Netherlands. The suspects are said to have been involved in “the criminal organization surrounding EncroChat”, and have been guilty of money laundering, among other things.
There were also searches last week, but the Public Prosecution Service does not want to make any further announcements due to the ongoing investigation. The suspects will remain in custody for at least two weeks.

It is estimated that hundreds of suspects have been arrested over the past two years based on EncroChat messages. The company had 12,000 users in the Netherlands.
There are many dozens of lawsuits in which the messages are used as evidence. Lawyers regularly criticize this, because it is unclear how the police hacked EncroChat and whether it went according to the rules. Nevertheless, several cases have already ruled that the evidence is admissible and suspects have been sentenced to prison terms.
In recent months, people have also been arrested abroad for setting up and running EncroChat, various media reported. It is not yet clear who are the suspects who were arrested in the Netherlands.
