Ten members of the family were arrested on a “day of action” on April 12. Six important suspects who have been in jail since then were at an introductory session before the Amsterdam court on Thursday.
Justice accuses the family of laundering money for criminals on a large scale since July 2018, through underground banking. According to the public prosecutors, mutual conversations and chats show that the family had been active for much longer. One of the main suspects has been talking about it for 20 years.
The major criminal case codenamed Holmen is the result of an investigation that started at the end of 2019 on the basis of information from the Criminal Intelligence Team (TCI), the secret service of the criminal investigation department. The detectives secretly placed cameras in front of ‘the headquarters’: a business property of the family on the Hoogoorddreef in Zuidoost. According to the police, images showed transfers of bags with possible cash −.
Observations and tracking of suspects’ cars with beacons provided additional evidence.
Imranalie Basnoe and other main suspects sent other relatives, according to the prosecutors. They acted as money couriers or administrators, or according to the judiciary they ran ‘secondary locations’ in the form of travel agency Basnoe Travel, Basnoe Telecom and Basnoe Tropical Shop.
Important evidence against the family comes from chat conversations, also conducted via encrypted PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) smartphones that were affiliated with the downed providers Sky ECC and EncroChat.
According to the judiciary, some conversations are ‘obviously’ about drug money, which must be shielded from the government. A relative would have inquired about the cost of a block (usually a kilo) of cocaine. Hidden spaces in furniture and trading large amounts via bitcoin were also discussed.
