Professor Peter Sommer insisted cops often need to find other evidence to secure convictions.
The cybersecurity specialist said: "Material gathered from EncroChat has been invaluable but police still have to gather further evidence to bolster the strength of their cases.
"They can vary considerably. Sometimes the sole evidence is EncroChat intercepts from the French.
"In others, police have gone on and conducted raids. They've found cocaine, money, guns and bombs and then got a securer conviction."
Prof Sommer has advised prosecutors about EncroChat phones owned by drug dealers.
Forces in France and Netherlands made a breakthrough in 2020 that let them read messages exchanged by underworld groups across Europe.
Prof Summer added: "If you are dealing in drugs then a lot of communications traffic is going to be visible unless you take precautions.
"EncroChat was produced by a Dutch company but gained considerable popularity.
"But the Dutch and French located the system's computer server and got it to send the handsets a modification which weakened its security features.
"It was then possible to download material, which was collected by the French."
He said the encryption app's makers claimed it made it "impossible" for cops to track messages - and the motivation for buying it was fears over eavesdropping.
