An organised crime gang planned to supply millions of pounds worth of cocaine around the south Wales valleys and parts of England after some of its members built up huge amounts of debt. Nine men, including a carer and a "truly wonderful family man" were part of the group that conspired to supply 70 kilograms of cocaine, with couriers and an 'accountant' working beneath two masterminds.
The plot saw the men communicate via encrypted phone messages, using handles including 'Fire Starter Boss', 'Mobile Gold' and 'Jaguar Master', while individual deliveries of up to five kilograms of cocaine were planned. Some of these deliveries were made by gang members who carried significant amounts of the Class A drug in a rucksack, while food packages were also proposed to move drugs and money.
The group were caught after communications network EncroChat, which they used to send their encrypted messages, was cracked by French law enforcement in 2020. A subsequent police investigatio into encrypted communications, Operation Draco, was launched, with the men arrested after being found to be involved in a conspiracy to supply cocaine between January 1 and August 19 2020.
Those involved were split into two sides of the conspiracy, with one side being led by Mark Jenkins, 40, and the other by 38-year-old Mark Davies, 38. Under Jenkins was his right-hand man, Robert Butler, 46, and below him was the group's "accountant" Nicholas Kirkham-Jones, 31, as well as two couriers, 39-year-old Andrew Pitman and 25-year-old Tommy Lee Lewis.
Also working under Jenkins, two other men, Garian Ahearne, 31, and Danny Tomlin, 36, sold the drugs on and returned the money back to the group. On the other side of the conspiracy, Davies had just one man working under him, 33-year-old Christopher Matthews.
The nine men were sentenced for their various roles in the conspiracy at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday, April 6, having all entered guilty pleas over their involvement. Ahearne was also sentenced for three other offences having also been charged with possession of cannabis, conspiracy to supply cannabis and being concerned in the offer to supply cocaine.
