Child abuse and terrorism are the usual pretexts to scare the public into supporting them, but you can’t give organised crime access to weak encryption technology while letting everyone else use the secure kind. Encryption is part of the critical infrastructure of modern societies, from online shopping to digital payments to national security to letters to the editor. The price of forcing us all to use weak encryption would be too great for the hypothetical and uncertain benefits it would bring against horrible crimes.
